Water
"Water is uniquely suited as a healing medium, and the interplay between gravity and buoyancy, weighted and weightlessness, is therapeutic on many different levels.
When we create a dialogue within ourselves between the realm of water and the realm of land, healing is accelerated, and quality of life is enhanced." (Burdenko 2002)
Water or aqua therapy and exercise is not a new fangled idea, since the 5th century BC, the ancient Greek's documented Hydrotherapy and its pain relieving benefits.
Hydrotherapy relies on the properties of water to provide a therapeutic environment, water being a gentler means of applying physical stimuli or pressure to your body is of greater benefits to certain conditions.
Some benefits you can enjoy include stimulating blood flow, reducing oedema, assisting in pain relief and increasing flexibility thus increasing your mobility and strength.
Together with the stimuli mentioned above Aquatic exercise can increase balance, stability, muscular strength and endurance plus improve cardiovascular fitness.
Aquatic training is also used by elite athletes for training and rehabilitation purposes e.g.
- Cassius Clay developed the famous Ali shuffle in water
- Wayne Rooney rehabilitated his ankle injury in water
- Paula Radcliffe rehabilitated her leg injury in water
